Welcome to Antigua and Barbuda!
The Heart of the Caribbean.
Antigua celebrates a rich cultural and natural heritage from a history of prominence and power under British rule. It is easy to think Antigua must have always been important considering it became the seat of the leeward islands relatively early in 1696, but just 40 years before that the first settlers were threatening to abandon the island due to its unsatisfactory conditions. Even our many protected bays, one of the islands most precious resources to a navy in hurricane threatened waters, were detrimental to early settlers on Antigua, providing hidden coves for enemies to land safely. It was mainly through luck and timing that Antigua gained power; a war with the french who devastated the more built up other British isles, a Dutch invasion on Suriname which prompted wealthy planters to leave and settle Antigua. These allowed the British to build up, leading Antigua to its appointment as a place of power.
Our cultural heritage is hard to miss. Antigua was the most fortified island in the Caribbean to protect its many bays, and many of these can still be seen today. As well, Nelson's Dockyard is the only working Georgian period Dockyard in the world today; restored in the 1950's it now hosts many businesses, a world class marina and a museum. The St. Johns Cathedral dominates the skyline in St. Johns and many other old churches dot the landscape across the island.
Take a look at what interests you, and for my fellow Antiguans, there is always something new to learn.
